Vehicle Access Gates
Vehicle access gates close the entrance in a site security fence, so the perimeter can be locked when vehicles are not passing. The heavy duty range is built to install as part of a temporary or semi-permanent fencing system, with steel frames, posts that are either concreted in or base plated, and a slide bolt to secure the gate shut. HERMEQ supplies a vehicle gate for each type of fence line, from heavy duty mesh vehicle gates and palisade vehicle gates to Safe Mesh V mesh gates, along with solid clad gates for hoarding and automatic swing and bi-folding gates for entrances in daily use.
Heavy duty, palisade, mesh and automatic gates
The fence line a gate closes and the ground under its posts settle most of the choice between the types in the range.
Heavy duty mesh vehicle gates
Mesh gates are the everyday choice for a construction entrance in a temporary fence line, and for semi-permanent site fencing where the gate stays for the length of a project. The heavy duty mesh vehicle gates hang from dig-in posts, and the stock heavy duty vehicle gates come in one standard size, 5.0 m wide and 2.4 m high, painted black.
Solid steel and hybrid clad gates
Clad gates continue a solid hoarding face across the entrance, so the gate reads as part of the steel wall hoarding or timber line around it. The solid steel clad vehicle gate is the match for a fully screened site, and the hybrid half mesh, half clad gate sits between it and the mesh gate.
On-ground base plated gates
On-ground gates stand on base-plated posts weighted with concrete blocks, for entrances where digging is not allowed or where the gate will move with the work. The duo plate on-ground gate (OG1) is built for high security compounds and infrastructure projects, while the base plated on-ground gate (OG2) and the single plate on-ground gate (OG4) divide by ground conditions. The TVCB on-ground gate (OG3) closes a line of TVCB concrete barriers, and the set pairs with on-ground fencing where the rest of the perimeter is freestanding too.
Site Guard clad and unclad gates
Site Guard gates are double leaf gates on dig-in posts for temporary and semi-permanent site fencing, and they run to the widest manual openings in the range, which suits entrances taking articulated lorries. The clad Site Guard gate carries profiled V mesh cladding across the leaves, and the unclad Site Guard gate has an open frame for entrances where a plain gate is enough.
Palisade vehicle gates
On a palisade fencing perimeter, palisade vehicle gates carry the same W section pales across the entrance, so the gate presents the same face as the fence to anyone trying to climb or force it. They are double leaf gates on dig-in posts concreted into the ground, and they are the usual entrance for depots, yards and utility compounds with a permanent boundary.
Safe Mesh V mesh vehicle gates
The Safe Mesh 656 V mesh vehicle gate continues the twin wire mesh of V mesh perimeter fencing across the entrance, for schools, business parks and commercial sites with a mesh boundary. It is made in several heights, widths and colours to match the fence, and a fabricated double leaf Safe Mesh gate in black or green is also available.
Electric swing and bi-folding gates
Electric gates suit entrances that open many times a day, where a manual gate would hold up traffic or tie a member of staff to the entrance. The trackless bi-folding speed gates and the automatic bi-folding gate fold their leaves as they open, for entrances with little room for the leaves to swing and traffic that cannot wait. The Auto Swing 180 degree gate opens its leaves right back for a wide, clear opening.

In-ground or on-ground vehicle gates
Dig-in posts are the choice for an entrance that will stay for the length of a project or longer: the posts are concreted into the ground, and on the heavy duty gates they run 600 mm longer than the gate is high, because that length sits below the surface. On-ground gates stand on base-plated posts held down by concrete blocks, which are ordered separately, with four blocks per gate for the OG1, OG2 and OG4, and two TVCB blocks for the OG3. The OG2 is made for flat, even surfaces, and the OG4 is the one to choose where the ground is uneven. Because nothing is dug, an on-ground gate goes in and comes out without breaking a finished surface such as a car park, footpath or yard slab, and the entrance can be moved as the work moves. Safe Mesh gates add a third option, with bolt-down posts fixed to existing hardstanding where a permanent mesh gate is wanted without excavation.
Vehicle access gates for construction sites and events
Construction site entrances
The opening has to suit the swept path of the largest delivery lorry, which needs more width than the vehicle itself as it turns in off the road, and the gate is best set back far enough for a waiting lorry to stand clear of the carriageway. On a hoarded site, the solid steel or hybrid clad gate keeps the hoarding face unbroken across the entrance, a mesh perimeter takes the heavy duty mesh vehicle gate, and a wide entrance for articulated lorries takes a double leaf Site Guard gate. A pedestrian gate beside it keeps site staff out of the vehicle entrance.
Events and short-term compounds
Festival car parks, show grounds and contractors' compounds are often fenced with Heras panels, also called harris fencing, and temporary fence gates for Heras panels are the lightweight match for that fencing. Where an event entrance crosses a hard surface that cannot be dug, the on-ground gates stand on concrete blocks instead of dig-in posts: the TVCB on-ground gate (OG3) matches a TVCB barrier line, and the single plate on-ground gate (OG4) suits uneven ground.

Infill, finish and locks for heavy duty steel gates
Mesh, clad or palisade infill
Full mesh keeps sight lines open through the entrance, so traffic marshals inside can see vehicles approaching and cameras can cover the gate. The hybrid gate screens the lower half of the leaf, hiding materials and plant stored at ground level while leaving the upper half open. Solid steel cladding screens the whole leaf and matches the face of timber or steel hoarding, which suits sites beside busy footpaths and shopfronts.
Painted, powder coated or galvanised
The heavy duty gates are painted on one side as standard and can be ordered painted or powder coated to suit the site. Galvanising is available on palisade gates.
Slide bolts, drop bolts and Locinox locks
Every heavy duty gate closes with a slide bolt. Site Guard gates use a slide latch with two drop bolts that hold the leaves in place open or closed, so wind cannot swing them across the entrance. Safe Mesh gates come with a choice of a slide latch or a Locinox lock, which locks with a key and suits a gate opened by staff several times a day.
Pedestrian gates and raise arm barriers
A separate pedestrian gate beside the vehicle gate gives people their own way in, off the route the lorries use, and lets the vehicle gate stay shut between deliveries. On palisade lines that means a palisade pedestrian gate. Twin wire mesh perimeters take the Safe Mesh 656 pedestrian gate, or the 868 mesh pedestrian gate with its heavier wires. Hoarded sites use the heavy duty pedestrian gate for hoarding. Where traffic only needs stopping and checking, a barrier arm does the job without a gate. The manual raise arm barrier suits occasional use, and the heavy duty raise arm barrier spans wider roads. An automatic raise arm barrier handles entrances in constant use, and the full set sits under vehicle access barriers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Manual gates in the range run from about 3 m to over 8 m wide, and automatic double leaf gates reach 10 m. Most site entrances take a double leaf gate sized to the largest delivery vehicle on the job.
Yes. A heavy duty gate stands on its own dig-in or on-ground posts, so it does not depend on the panels for support, and the temporary fence run is brought up to each gate post.
Most manual vehicle gates in the range are double leaf, which halves the swing of each leaf and allows one leaf to open for a car while the other stays shut. The automatic swing and bi-folding gates come as single or double leaf, with single leaf gates used on narrower openings.
The Auto Swing 180 degree gate and the automatic bi-folding gate are made to EN 12453, the European standard for the safe use of power operated gates and doors. It covers risks such as crushing and impact as the leaves move, and the NSAI publishes it as I.S. EN 12453.
Yes, provided the gate matches the fence type so the perimeter keeps one face. The fence is cut back to the width of the gate and its posts, and the posts are then set in the opening by the method that suits the ground, whether concreted in, base plated on blocks or bolted down.
